sepultura discography

Sepultura – literally “tomb” or “grave” in Portuguese -- is a Brazilian death-thrash metal band formed by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera in 1984. Sepultura started out in the early 1980s as a primitive death/black metal band but later incorporated Brazilian music and other diverse styles into their albums.

Underground Roots:

Sepultura gained underground notoriety for their raw early albums Morbid Visions and Beneath the Remains. Tracks from those albums like “Troops of Doom” and “Funeral Rites” are now considered canonical black metal songs along with the works of American peers like Possessed. The band was fronted for a brief time by Wagner Lamounier, who went on to form the influential Brazilian black metal band I.N.R.I.

Mainstream Success:

As the Cavalera brothers grew musically they changed and expanded their sound. The shift began with the 1989 album Beneath the Remains and peaked with the now classic Roots, which cemented their place atop the South American metal scene and boosted their popularity in America and elsewhere.

Sepultura Today:

Sepultura rose from their humble roots to eventually garner wide praise even among mainstream critics and platinum sales around the globe. Sepultura was also at the forefront of a burgeoning South America metal scene that now produces artists across metal genres. Sepultura continues recording and touring but neither of the Cavalera brothers are involved – they are instead writing and recording as Cavalera Conspiracy although they often hint at a reunion of the original lineup.

Recommended Sepultura Albums:

Morbid Visions and Roots
The earliest version of Sepultura was much different than the band from the mid '90s so two recommendations are necessary. First, pick up Morbid Visions and get a slice of raw necro black/death metal recorded well before Norwegian bands like Darkthrone and early Mayhem recorded their low-fi classics.
Then, skip to the pivotal Roots, which incorporates traditional metal with ethic Brazilian music. What was the band’s finest hour musically was also Max Cavalera’s last album with Sepultura. The latter album contains the Sepultura classic "Roots, Bloody Roots," which is the band's best-known song.
